Entry for the 2004 C2C Competition
- Cradle to Cradle - the design of a sustainable, single-family home in
Roanoke, Virginia. The project was designed for an urban lot, 25'x 92'
long. Three units were put on the site, including a workshop/ retail unit,
and two apartments - a larger 2,700 sf unit and a smaller 1,800 sf unit
off the alley. Recycled building materials were utilized, including the
common wooden pallet. Five different types of construction methods were
suggested, to work in various areas of the house. The project proposed
to collaborate with the William J. Sardo Pallet Laboratory in Blacksburg,
Virginia to finalize detailed constructability issues pertaining to the
pallet. Other greening principles included green roofs, harvesting of
stormwater, and natural ventilation.
